BUT MOST JOB SEEKERS SUFFER MORE FROM POOR JOB-HUNTING SKILLS THAN FROM LACK OF OPPORTUNITY, ACCORDING TO TERRY MULLINS, PH.D., DEAN OF THE SCHOOL OF BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION AT THE UNIVERSITY OF EVANSVILLE IN INDIANA. HERE ARE HIS 10 TIPS FOR IMPROVING YOUR ODDS OF FINDING A JOB QUICKLY.

1. Discover your strengths and learn to talk about them. Since employers estimate future successes by past accomplishments, learn to think of your experience in terms of goals achieved, abilities developed, lessons learned. A cares study of your accomplishments will reveal the best of your skills.
Most people are uncomfortable promoting themselves or revealing their ambitions because as children many of us are taught not to brag. But though self-congratulating may be rude at a dinner party, it's expected at an interview. So get comfortable telling your "story" by sharing it with a sympathetic friend, because overcoming an ingrained reluctance to speak highly of yourself is essential if you hope to convince an employer to hire you.
2. Prepare a resume that is compatible with electronic data bases. Many firms rely on computerized resume data bases to generate potential job applicants. Instead of being screened by a person, your resume may be scanned into an electronic data base. The data base uses applicant-tracking software to match key words from a job description with key words in the resume.
To make your resume compatible, you should use a common typeface, such as Courier, which is readily recognized by optical scanning programs. Since some scanning programs have trouble reading italic and boldface type, use these sparingly.
3. Plan your interview story carefully. Most successful interviews follow a three-scene script. Cooperate with the script and you increase your chances of being hired. Fight it or ignore it and your interview may run aground.
Scene One: Lasting about three minutes, this scene consists of small talk and is really a compatibility contest. As you shake hands, make eye contact and smile. Show that you are courteous, friendly, and at ease with yourself and the situation. These "small" points are not trivial.
Scene Two: Lasting about 15 minutes to an hour or more, this scene is mainly you telling your story. You need to explain your skills, abilities, accomplishments, and ambitions. Emphasize your ability to add value to the employer. If you can claim credit for increasing sales, reducing costs, or improving quality, now is the time to do so. If you have any holes in your experience or blemishes on your record, handle them now. As you conclude this scene, stress your ability and willingness to perform at a high level.
Scene Three: Lasting only a minute or two, this scene closes the interview and sets up the next steps. Do not allow the interviewer to close with the usual, "We'll be in touch with you when we decide something." This statement leaves you powerless to influence the decision. Instead, you should end the interview by saying, "I'll keep you posted about developments in my job search." This comment keeps you in control, allowing you to follow up with additional information that may improve your chance of being hired.
4. Create a network of friendly contacts who can hire you or recommend you to others who can. Developing a network of contacts is the single most important task of a job seeker. You need to tell your story to people who have the power to hire you. In other words, you want a network filled with potential bosses. This contact can be made in a letter detailing your interest in the field and your respect for the person's stature within it. Follow up with a phone call.
When you go in for the appointment, don't ask for a job. If you do, the person you are networking with may feel tricked. The visit is a chance to learn from his or her expertise and make an ally in your job search. If impressed you might end up with some interviews. Remember, before you leave, ask for the names of others who might be able to help you out.
Forty or 50 networking interviews should produce several job offers. If not, you should polish your interviewing skills and begin the process again.
Don't limit your search to larger firms. Today, small- and medium-sized firms create the most new jobs. With a small company, it is easier to get hired and you are likely to receive greater responsibility sooner. True, small firms traditionally pay less and provide fewer benefits, but not always. Finally, solid accomplishments at a small firm can translate into a better job at a larger company.
6. Make job hunting a full-time commitment. Stories abound of well-qualified people who have been unemployed for a year or more. Is the problem a poor economy or something else? Frequently, it is something else--minimal job-hunting efforts, perhaps. Surveys have shown that most people who have been unemployed for lengthy periods spend fewer than five hours a week actively searching for work. They manage to land only one or two interviews each month. If you are unemployed, you should spend a minimum of 40 hours a week actively searching for work. As a full-time job seeker, your goal should be at least one interview a day with someone who has the power to hire you. For lower-level jobs, even more interviews a day are possible. You've heard the saying, "Looking for a job is a full-time job," Consider putting in some overtime as well.
7. Be willing to move. Many people limit their prospects by refusing to look for jobs outside their hometown. Unemployment remains high in the Northeast and in California, in part, because many job seekers will not move to find a job. In many companies, and in some occupations, moving is the only way to advance.
8. Be flexible. You should know your skills and seek jobs consistent with those skills. However, in today's economy, you need to be responsive to employers' needs. Most of us will hold many jobs in several careers during our working life. The nimble and flexible survive.
9. Do not forget the government. For the past 25 years, the growth of government jobs has outpaced the growth of private-sector jobs. State and local employment has grown even more rapidly than federal employment. Many government jobs demand high skill and offer high pay. Although being employed by the government may create some frustration, many people have found meaningful and rewarding careers as public employees.
10. Don't give up. Job hunting is psychologically challenging. You will face obstacles, setbacks, and rejections. Some people you encounter in your search will be unfeeling; a few will be cruel. You will get discouraged and you will be tempted to quit looking. However, the economy is creating hundreds of thousands of new jobs every month. General Motors, for example, will likely hire another 200,000 workers by the turn of the century. Many jobs being created are challenging and pay well. One can be yours, but only if you don't give up wanting it.

Why "Click here" is bad linking practice

Web pages often contain links like "Click here" or just "here". This document explains why such usage is bad practice, especially for accessibility reasons. For general information on accessibility, click... no, wait, I mean: There is general information on accessibility on the pages of the Web Accessibility Initiative, WAI.
"Click here" just looks stupid.
"Click here" looks especially stupid when printed on paper.
"Click here" is useless in a list of links or when in "links reading" mode, or whenever a link text is considered as isolated from its textual and visual context. The problems of
link texts out of context will be discussed in more detail below.
"Click here" is bad food for search engines. If you say "For information on pneumonia,
click here", search engines won't know that your document contains a link to a document about pneumonia. Some important search engines use the link text in estimating the relevance of a link. Using descriptive link texts thus helps users in finding documents they're interested in, potentially including your document due to a link text with some key word.
There's usually a fairly simple way to do things better. Instead of the text "For information on pneumonia,
click here", you could simply write "pneumonia information".
"Click here" is device-dependent. There are several ways to follow a link, with or without a mouse. Users probably recognize what you mean, but you are still conveying the message that you think in a device-dependent way.
Section
Link text in HTML Techniques for Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 1.0 says, among other things:
Good link text should not be overly general; don't use "click here." Not only is this phrase device-dependent (it implies a pointing device) it says nothing about what is to be found if the link if followed. Instead of "click here", link text should indicate the nature of the link target, as in "more information about sea lions" or "text-only version of this page". - -
"Auditory users" -- people who are blind, have difficulty seeing, or who are using devices with small or no displays -- are unable to scan the page quickly with their eyes. To get an overview of a page or to quickly find a link, these users will often tab from one link to the next or review a list of available links on a page.
But isn't "click here" a useful hint of what to do?
In the early days of the Web, the use of "click here" was defended on the grounds that users wouldn't otherwise know what to do. That is, authors thought that users needed hints on the elementary use of their browsers. Do you wish to get associated with that, with the presumptions of the era when Web browsers were something exotic?
Mental exercise: Imagine that pages generally contained phrases like "whistle to follow link", in a world where voice-controlled browsers are common (as they might be in the future). If you were using such a browser, the phrase would hardly do any good, since you most probably already knew how to follow links; it would just irritate to some extent. If you were using a different browser, well, you might find yourself alienated.
But of course it is relevant to users to recognize links as links. The mistake of using "click here" is often made as an attempt to reduce the harm caused by a different mistake: preventing links from looking like links. For example, if you use an image as a link and try and prevent the browser from drawing a border around it, or if you use style sheets to prevent from being underlined and/or not appearing in a distinctive color, then you might think you need to say "click here". Link texts out of context
On a Web page, links appear in contexts, such as in a list of links, or as adjacent to an image, or some text around. In fact, "click here" as link text presumes that there is some textual context that explains what the link refers to. The basic reason for avoiding "click here" is that there is no need to make such assumptions, which are often false in different modes of use.
Web pages are very often designed so that reading a page sequentially from the start till the end is rather uncomfortable. A user who wants to get a quick idea of the content can usually skim over the headings, emphasized phrases, links, and other prominent parts, then perhaps follow a link that points to a page he really needs. But such use is impossible to people who cannot see, or are otherwise using the page in non-visual mode, or are confused with the structure or the presentation of a complex page. Hence, various tools for the blind, for example, need to give users options for doing something that corresponds to "skimming over", e.g. to get a list all headings or the list of all links.
Several browsers and other programs can automatically generate a list of links on a page, based on the markup for links and on the link texts. The list might be displayed on screen, printed on paper (perhaps as "references" at the end of the output), or read aloud. A browser could also have a "links reading mode" where the user can tab from one link to another and have the links read for him. Even for browsers that have no such features built in, you could install one, provided that you a willing to allow JavaScript execution; in
Ian's favelets at the Accessify.com site, there is a utility that you can easily install so that it can be used via a browser menu whenever you wish to get a list of links on any page.
A list of links might or might not be accompanied with the presentation of the address (URL) that the link refers to or with the value of an eventual title attribute in the element. It is safest to assume that it is not, i.e. that the link text needs to "stand alone". The list could in alphabetic order, or in the order in which the links appear in the document.
Apparently, "click here" does not work at all when isolated from its context. If you have several links with that text, the list looks very silly and is not of much use.
Citations of statements against using "Click here"
Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 1.0 say, in guideline 13: Provide clear navigation mechanisms:
Link text should be meaningful enough to make sense when read out of context -- either on its own or as part of a sequence of links. Link text should also be terse.
For example, in HTML, write "Information about version 4.3" instead of "click here". - -
Tim Berners-Lee, now the director of the World Wide Web Consortium, wrote, in his classical Style Guide for online hypertext, section Printable Hypertext:
Try to avoid references in the text to online aspects. "See the section on
device independence" is better than "For more on device independence, click here.". In fact we are talking about a form of device independence.

Jakob Nielsen, the usability expert, has written, in his alertbox Accessible Design for Users With Disabilities:
Users with dyslexia may have problems reading long pages - -. Selecting words with high information content as hypertext anchors will help these users, as well as blind users, scan for interesting links (no "click here", please).

Do You Have What it Takes to SOHO ?


Working from home might sound fantastic for some especially for mums, aint it so ? no need to be stuck in the traffic, able to spend more time with your kids, more time to get your groceries, no fixed schedules, no late appointments, flexibility, you earn what you made, dont have to worry abour retrenchment, no office politics, dont have to buy expensive dress to show off to your co workers, dont have to make-up is this what you are thinking ?
If its so then I would really hope you think more than twice before you jump onto this SOHO thingy. Its not as easy as you perceive to be a succesful self employed.
Even tough these are all indisputably strong benefits of running your own SOHO business, all these are attainable provided you put enough efforts into it. There is a lot of sacrifices to be made before you would even arrive at a point where you will consider all the above mentioned quality will be a benefits to you. There are factors influencing whether a person is suitable to run their own SOHO business or otherwise.
These factors are :

b.] Financial
c.] Enviromental
Lets look at all the Personal elements that would be influencing your decision on whether you are suitable to become self employed or else.
Commitment – You must be totally committed to ensure the success of your business. You will also have to make sure that you can tell the differences between a commitment and a hobby/interest. Interest will dies off over time but commitment will grow and be even stronger as time goes by. You must have the “FIRE” in you to achieve the success you have been dreaming of.
Risk-Taker – Its not like you are still working for someone else, if you screws up you will hafta bear the losses, its your own money! So, if you aren’t really a risk taker perhaps a paid employment is a better option.
Self Motivation – No more motivational seminar where peoples holds hand and sings motivational song unless, you are paying for it yourself. So now you gotta be able to motivate yourself to do even the most annoying task as long as it puts money into your bank.
Self Discipline – Working from home does have a lot of disadvantages, even more if you are a mum and you kids are constantly bugging you for attention. There will be no end to the distractions you will get. So the key here is Discipline, you need a lotsa discipline to make sure you stays on the track.
Patience - starting a home-business is one thing; turning a profit is quite another. You will not make a profit overnight. Be prepared to be patient and frugal during the first few months of your new venture. Make every cents count!
Flexibility and Adaptability – before you started your own SOHO, you may have a lot of staffs working for you, you may even have your own secretary or PA to assist and to take care daily routine work, but now you are on your own and you must prepare to be able to play all those roles youself. At least in the early stage of your SOHO, you have to learn new skills and to adapt as soon as you can. Its definitely not a bed of roses.
Willingness to Sacrifice – especially in the early stages of your business, be prepared to make sacrifices in terms of time and money to get your business off the ground. You will need to be prepared to put in long hours and, more likely than not, get by on less money than you were bringing home from your paid job.
Stress Management - the burden of your SOHO success or failure will rest solely on your shoulders. That’s a lot of responsibility. Can you cope with the stress ? do you have a good stress management program ? Judge your own level of stress management and the level of stress you can absorb, if it’s not high, you either look for a way to increase it or you will be better off working for others.




Sony Playstation 3 is Out ?

The PS3 will feature IBM's new "Cell" processor, which will run at 3.2 GHz and give the system two teraflops of overall performance. This processor vaults the PS3 to the top of the list for most powerful, next-gen consoles -- rumor has it that the PS3 is two times more powerful than the Xbox 360 and 15 times more powerful than Nintendo.It seems awful suspicious that Sony’s PlayStation 3—with its sketchy release timeframe, malleable specs, and yet unannounced price—would show up willy nilly with an official MSRP on Amazon—but it has. Kind of. It’s a little tricky though, because Amazon often has resellers and used listings; yet this one appears semi-legit. Then again, it is marked for the same price as Microsoft’s Xbox 360 (as announced earlier today), $299, which aside from being a remarkable coincidence seems pretty low given some of the estimates we’ve heard about the PS3. You know, with Amazon sometimes anything goes.

One of the key questions about the PS3 was what kind of media it would use. Sony has announced that the PS3 will use Blu-Ray discs as its media format, which can hold six times as much data as current DVDs. The PS3 will also support CR-ROM, CD-RW, DVD, DVD-ROM, DVD-R, DVD+R formats.Sony has confirmed that the machine will be backward compatible all the way to the original PlayStation -- you'll be able to play all your favorite games without keeping all the old systems. The console will have slots for Memory Stick Duo, an SD slot and a compact flash memory slot. It will also sport a slot for a detachable 2.5-inch hard disc drive, somewhat similar to the Xbox 360's. Whether or not this drive will come standard still remains a mystery.

What's a Degree Worth Today?

The Star last week had an interesting article which claimed that many degree and diploma holders are "hiding" their qualifications to secure low-paying jobs in the public sector.
Fire and Rescue Department deputy director-general Datuk Wan Mohd Nor Ibrahim said many graduates only submitted their PMR and SPM qualifications when applying to become firemen, a job only requiring a PMR certificate.“I think many of the graduates may not want to reveal their tertiary education background until they have joined the department after completing their basic four-and-a-half months' training. Most of them are worried that their applications may be rejected if they reveal their educational background in their application forms,” he said, adding that this year some 23,250 applications were received for 533 vacancies for firemen.So, from this little piece of evidence, is it true that degrees today are "worthless scraps of paper" sufficient only to qualify one for low-paying jobs?Well, of course not, at least not totally true anyway. I will hazard a guess that these candidates who were desperate enough to apply for the above positions were not sufficiently qualified in their fields of study, and hence their difficulty in being able to secure a position in their preferred choices. The reasons could be many, and I've discussed some of them in my previous posts here, here and here.However, I will attribute this to a direct result of the lowering of standards in the local universities in order to meet the application and political demands of the country, as well as the inability to attract sufficient quality lecturers and tutors to all the mushrooming universities and colleges (private and public) in the country.

Firstly, it has become too "easy" to enter a university in Malaysia. Many of the students who entered the local universities would have SPM aggregates in excess of 25 (that an average of 6 B4s or C5s for the best 6 SPM subjects) and STPM grades (or equivalent) of 2Ds (or worse). Putting it bluntly, the theory is simple - barring exceptions, you will get rubbish in, rubbish out. There is a large pool of students who should not have been admitted into unversities, in our local universities - when that happens, the standard drops.

Secondly, the universities are then put in a bind - they can't possibly fail all these students, can they? That wouldn't be the politically correct thing to do. Hence as a results, the standards to "pass" and obtain their degrees are intentionally or unintentionally lowered, in order to enable many of these candidates to graduate from the university. The end result of the above - unemployable graduates. It is hence not surprising at all that these graduates are "forced" to apply for low-paying civil service jobs available in the market. As quoted above, that's more than 23,000 applications for less than 550 positions, which in all likelihood pays approximately RM600-800 per month.In my case, where I have stringent requirements for strong programming foundations for my application developers, I'm forced to largely recruit computer science graduates from the top 5-6 local universities with CGPA scores above 3.3 (out of 4.0) to ensure that I get quality. For some of my maintenance and support staff, I will recruit those above a score of 3.0. For those with CGPA between 2.0-2.6 (or worse), these candidates should never have taken up the Computer Science degree - because I really don't think they learnt anything much during their 3-4 year courses.It will really be too inaccurate to attempt to generalise the measure the value of "degrees" today. There are indeed many factors involved - particularly the quality of the institution attended and the grades obtained. If you are a first class honours graduate from University Malaya - I will more likely than not, snap you up immediately, while you are likely to be immediately rejected if you have a second class lower degree from say, TAR College.

What do the iPod, Sony PlayStation Portable and Motorola RAZR cell phone have in common? Sure, they're ultracool gadgets. But they, and similar gadgets, also rely on rechargeable batteries.
While batteries probably don't rank high on most people's list of hot high-tech topics, PSP screens would go dark, RAZR calls wouldn't be connected and you wouldn't be able to listen to any iPod tunes without them.

Today's most popular battery choice is the lithium-ion variety. Other types you may see are lithium-polymer (Li-Poly and very similar to lithium-ion) nickel-cadmium (Ni-Cad) and nickel-metal hydride (NiMH).

Here, some battery tips:

•Consider battery conditioning.

Lithium-ion and lithium-polymer batteries typically arrive in a partially charged state. Most manufacturers will tell you to completely charge them before use. Otherwise, they don't need to be conditioned.

Nickel-based batteries require conditioning, which means they must be completely charged and discharged several times before initial use. Otherwise, they won't function to their full potential. Check the manual that came with your device to find out more about conditioning.

•Charge batteries properly.

Batteries can be troublesome. They lose capacity over time. Further, they have a limited number of charge cycles.

You can prolong their lifespan. Failing to properly condition nickel-based batteries could lead to the formation of crystals, which can lead to batteries that won't hold a full charge, which can lead to memory problems in your ultracool gadget.

With lithium-ion batteries, partial charges and discharges are best on a regular basis. These batteries do not develop memory problems.

However, lithium-ion batteries contain a fuel gauge that must be reset periodically. The fuel gauge measures the charge left in a battery. A gauge that is not reset periodically might become inaccurate. This can be critical in laptop power managements systems that rely on the gauge to tell you how much juice is left before the computer shuts off. If the gauge is off, your laptop might shut down unexpectedly, and you'll lose your work. To prevent this from happening, completely discharge lithium-ion batteries about once a month to reset the gauge.

Fuel gauges should not be a problem with nickel-based batteries, assuming they are discharged and charged regularly.

•Store batteries correctly.

It's best to use your batteries regularly. But sometimes you have to store them, and storage can pose problems.

Don't store batteries completely discharged. A 50% charge is optimum for storage.

Also, recondition nickel-based batteries if you have stored them for six months or longer to help regain lost capacity. Charge lithium-type batteries when you're ready to use them after storage.

•Batteries don't last forever.

It's a fact of life. No matter how well you care for a battery, it will eventually die.

You'll have many options when you buy a replacement battery. Third-party replacements are available online. Prices are often a fraction of manufacturers' prices. Sellers might also boast improved performance.

Fight your frugal urges. Manufacturers test their batteries to ensure a good fit. They also test the batteries rigorously for safety. If something goes wrong — such as a short circuit — with a third-party replacement, chances are you've voided your gadget's warranty.

Dispose of your batteries correctly since they contain hazardous chemicals not suitable for landfills. Many electronics retailers have in-store collection points. To find a drop-off location near you, visit the Rechargeable Battery Recycling Corporation home page at www.rbrc.org.

•Last, but not least: Batteries are on the cusp of a new age.

Toshiba recently announced a rapid-charge battery. This lithium-ion model achieves 80% of its charge in one minute. It's fully charged in a few more minutes.

What's more, the battery is small, less susceptible to extreme temperatures and boasts a longer lifespan. It will debut in 2006, primarily for automotive purposes. Expect adaptations for personal technology use.

Fuel cell batteries also are on the way for electronics. Fuel cell batteries aren't recharged — they're refilled with a chemical such as methanol.

This means instantaneous power. The chemical reacts with air to produce power. Fuel cells have roughly 50 times the power potential of comparably sized lithium-ion batteries.

New mouse for Macs has multiple buttons

Apple Computer Inc. introduced on Tuesday its first computer mouse with multiple buttons, including four sensors and a tiny scroll ball.

Although a departure from the company's traditional mouse, the "Mighty Mouse" looks very similar to the single-button model Apple has long produced.
The most obvious difference is the relatively tiny scroll ball at the mouse's head, which can move cursors diagonally as well as up and down across display screens and can be pressed to "click" functions.
Like Microsoft, Apple has for years built added functionality into its operating systems to accommodate multi-button mice. But you had to buy mice made by other manufacturers, such as Microsoft or Logitech, to take advantage.
Designers of the new Apple device wanted a scroll ball that was less obtrusive than other scroll balls and "stayed out of the way" of users who chose not to use it, said David Moody, vice president of Macintosh hardware product marketing.
In lieu of actual buttons beyond the scroll ball, the optical-scanning mouse has four sensors that can be programmed for multiple actions, just like the left and right buttons on many PC mouses.
Mighty Mouse, which connects via a USB port, is PC-compatible but won't be able to move your cursor diagonally in Microsoft's Windows, Apple said.
It will retail for $49.

Microsoft product validation cracked!

Yikes when Microsoft announced that it was implementing product validation for the Windows system it sounded like a death keel for pirated software users. Yes no more product support for Windows besides security updates so bye bye freebies. What it does is that Windows requires you to download an Active X control onto your com which does the job of scanning your copy of Windows to determine if there is anything wrong with the serial number. Once it determines that it is genuine it installs a key to enable future downloads. Yet hackers found a way around Microsoft's Windows Genuine Advantage (WGA) anti-piracy system last week, only a day after the system went into effect. So even without a valid serial number, users can now use this hack to skirt the system and still get what they usually enjoy in the past. It does this through a simple JavaScript hack that was already circulating. All users had to do was paste a JavaScript URL into the Internet Explorer browser window at the beginning of the process; this turned off the key check, according to users. Details can be found here. A simple cut and past and voila, hackers sure are getting more and more smarter, shows what desperation does to people, it just motivates them to try harder to beat the system.

Nystagmus, defined ....

Background: Congenital or infantile nystagmus is a clinical sign that may take many different forms. Involuntary, rhythmic eye movements are characteristic, as they are in acquired nystagmus. Waveform, amplitude, and frequency can vary with changes in focal distance, direction of gaze, and under monocular or binocular viewing conditions.
Oscillations are usually horizontal in direction but may be primarily vertical, torsional, or any combination of these three. Infantile nystagmus often is associated with other ocular conditions that impair visual acuity and occasionally can herald life-threatening conditions. Prompt assessment by an ophthalmologist with knowledge of infantile nystagmus to establish the need for and urgency of additional evaluation is extremely important.
Pathophysiology: Few patients are noted to have nystagmus onset at birth. The term infantile is probably more accurate than congenital and includes nystagmus that presents within the first months of life. This disorder classically has been divided into afferent (sensory deficit) nystagmus, which is due to visual impairment, and efferent, (idiopathic infantile) nystagmus, which is due to oculomotor abnormality, with most cases being sensory in origin.
Data from eye movement recordings have conclusively shown that waveform alone is not a reliable method of distinguishing between these 2 entities. Therefore, it is essential that all infants with nystagmus be evaluated thoroughly for a primary sensory cause. In addition, it recently has been suggested that the following 3 additional subtypes of infantile nystagmus exist: (1) nystagmus associated with albinism, (2) latent and manifest latent nystagmus, and (3) spasmus nutans.
Frequency:
In the US: The precise incidence and prevalence of nystagmus is unknown.
Mortality/Morbidity: Visual morbidity associated with nystagmus relates most closely to the underlying disorder affecting the visual or ocular motor system, which is responsible for the fixation instability. Infantile nystagmus rarely is associated with a life-threatening disorder.
Race: No reported racial predilection exists among patients with infantile nystagmus.
Sex: Infantile nystagmus affects males and females equally.
Age: Most patients with infantile nystagmus present within the first several months of life.
Nystagmus present at birth or prior to age 2 months is more likely to be idiopathic in nature or due to neurologic dysfunction. Sensory deficit nystagmus most commonly presents at age 2-3 months. Further investigation of the visual system is warranted in these cases. Nystagmus associated with albinism has characteristics similar to idiopathic nystagmus but usually is absent until after age 2 months.
Nystagmus that presents after age 6 months is considered late infantile or childhood nystagmus and carries a graver prognosis. The exception is spasmus nutans, with onset in children aged 4 months to 3 years. Resolution of this condition usually occurs within a year of onset. Chiasmal glioma can present in an identical manner to spasmus nutans.
Latent or manifest latent nystagmus often is discovered after the first few months of life, but it most often is associated with infantile strabismus and can be identified by its unique characteristics

Methods of Buying Property In Malaysia

In Malaysia, the two most common way to buy residential property is from the developer (during launch of housing development of condo) or via private sale. Private sales can be a direct sale between 2 parties or through a real-estate agent.

Here we give description of more ways to buy homes. And all of them are available in Malaysia. So if you’re looking to enter or sell in the market, these options may be able to get that 10% or 20% better price. (For further reading, check out Sarah Beeny’s Property Ladder)

For this post, let’s assume you’re looking to buy a house.

From the developer– this is as mentioned above, buying from the developer. For tips on sieving for good companies, read my earlier post. Generally, ask around with your friends, colleagues and industry personnel about your intended property, remember knowledge is power.

Via agents – First you contact several real estate agents specializing in the area you want. Explain clearly to them what you want (price, location, type of property) and check with periodically to ensure they don’t forget about you. Build a good rapport with your agent, their expertise and contacts is essential in getting you the right deal. When you are shown a property you really want, don’t dilliy dally! Put in your offer as soon as possible (after thinking it through) or the property may be sold by the time you decide.

Auction – This process is fast and furious and there can be pitfalls. Be sure to go with someone experienced and you can trust if you are unsure. A lot of it is dependent to luck, but you need to do the tiring legwork and paperwork before that you can land that good deal. The golden rule is to set your top limit and STICK TO IT. Another thing to remember is that vendors may well put up a property for say if there are complications. Therefore, know the background before you commit anything.

Do-It-Yourself – This may be a good way of finding property although you risk wasting a lot of time as vendors then to colour their description of the property they are selling and describe it in a totally unrealistic way over the phone. The best way is to frequently drive around areas you are targeting and seek out those private ‘for sale’ signs. This way you save on agent’s fees. But again, this is time-consuming and frustrating.

Newspapers – This is a good a way to have a feel of the market pricing of a particular area. Papers will carry details of private sales and auctions. But try to study the property section of the papers for few months before buying – that way you can be relatively confident of not only catching the right property of when it comes up but also that the sale price you are hoping for is not too far way off the mark.

The Internet – This media of property transaction is beginning to take-off here. There are a few good local sites, some focusing on second-hand market, some are agents for new launches, some specialize in auctions. Also, the internet is also a good place to find out more about developers, and to learn more about properties and the industry.

Web Traffic Analyzer

Analyzing your web traffic statistics can be an invaluable tool for a number of different reasons. But before you can make full use of this tool, you need to understand how to interpret the data.Most web hosting companies will provide you with basic web traffic information that you then have to interpret and make pertinent use of. However, the data you receive from your host company can be overwhelming if you don't understand how to apply it to your particular business and website. Let's start by examining the most basic data - the average visitors to your site on a daily, weekly, andmonthly basis.These figures are the most accurate measure of your website's activity. It would appear on the surface that the more traffic you see recorded, the better you can assume your website is doing, but this is an inaccurate perception. You must also look at the behavior of your visitors once they come to your website to accurately gauge the effectiveness of your site.There is often a great misconception about what is commonly known as "hits" and what is really effective, quality traffic to your site. Hits simply means the number of information requests received by the server. If you think about the fact that a hit can simply equate to the number of graphics per page, you will get an idea of how overblown the concept of hits can be. For example, if your homepagehas 15 graphics on it, the server records this as 15 hits, when in reality we are talking about a single visitor checking out a single page on your site. As you can see, hits are not useful in analyzing your website traffic.The more visitors that come to your website, the more accurate your interpretation will become. The greater the traffic is to your website, the more precise your analysis will be of overall trends in visitor behavior. The smaller the number of visitors, the more a few anomalous visitors can distort the analysis. The aim is to use the web traffic statistics to figure out how well or how poorly your site is working for your visitors. One way to determine this is to find out how long on average your visitors spend on your site. If the time spent is relatively brief, it usually indicates an underlying problem. Then the challenge is to figure out what that problem is.It could be that your keywords are directing the wrong type of visitors to your website, or that your graphics are confusing or intimidating, causing the visitor to exit rapidly. Use the knowledge of how much time visitors are spending on your site to pinpoint specific problems, and after you fix those problems, continue to use time spent as a gauge of how effective your fix has been.Additionally, web traffic stats can help you determine effective and ineffective areas of your website. If you have a page that you believe is important, but visitors are exiting it rapidly, that page needs attention. You could, for example, consider improving the link to this page by making the link more noticeable and enticing, or you could improve the look of the page or the ease that your visitorscan access the necessary information on that page.If, on the other hand, you notice that visitors are spending a lot of time on pages that you think are less important, you might consider moving some of your sales copy and marketing focus to that particular page.As you can see, these statistics will reveal vital information about the effectiveness of individual pages, and visitor habits and motivation. This is essential information to any successful Internet marketing campaign.Some websites have exit pages, such as a final order or contact form. This is a page you can expect your visitor to exit rapidly. However, not every visitor to your site is going to find exactly what he or she is looking for, so statistics may show you a number of different exit pages. This is normal unless you notice a exit trend on a particular page that is not intended as an exit page. In the case that a significant percentage of visitors are exiting your website on a page not designed for that purpose, you must closely examine that particular page to discern what the problem is. Once you pinpoint potential weaknesses on that page, minor modifications in content or graphic may have a significant impact on the keeping visitors moving through your site instead of exiting at the wrong page.After you have analyzed your visitor statistics, it's time to turn to your keywords and phrases. Notice if particular keywords are directing a specific type of visitor to your site. The more targeted the visitor - meaning that they find what they are looking for on your site, and even better, fill out your contact form or make a purchase - the more valuable that keyword is.However, if you find a large number of visitors are being directed - or should I say misdirected - to your site by a particular keyword or phrase, that keyword demands adjustment. Keywords are vital to bringing quality visitors to your site who are ready to do business with you. Close analysis of the keywords your visitors are using to find your site will give you a vital understanding of your visitor's needs and motivations.Finally, if you notice that users are finding your website by typing in your company name, break open the champagne! It means you have achieved a significant level of brand recognition, and this is a sure sign of burgeoning success.

Effects of Ringgit De-Peg on Property Market


So now our currency the ringgit has been de-peg. Most Malaysians should be buoyant about the rising value, somewhat akin to the pre-financial crisis days of the early 90’s.
Some observers had immediately mentioned the obvious benefitscheaper imported vehicles, less to pay of overseas education, more frequent holidays abroad and savings for local importers.
The downside – the exporters and plantation sector will be hit by this turn of events.
But what tidings for the property and construction sector?

Most market analysts have yet to released an in-depth study of the long term implications. But in a nutshell, a few negative consequences can be foreseen.

Foreigners have to pay more – The government has been promoting ‘Malaysia My Second Home’ recently. But due to the de-peg, foreigners now pay more, thus making property investing in Malaysia less attractive. Although the FIC has relaxed some of the rulings of late, I believe Malaysia may lose some of its competitive edge in this sector. Many high-end condominium projects are heavily marketed to Singaporeans, Hong Kong residents and Australians.
Cost of construction to increase – The property and construction industries are strongly intertwined. It is also a known fact that the Malaysian construction industry relies heavily of imported materials from overseas, like steel coil, heavy machineries, lift equipment, construction plant, extruded metals, etc. Higher construction costs means higher property prices. However if the ringgit gets stronger against the exporting companies’ currency, then the cost will be slightly reduced.
Malaysian companies overseas – the Malaysian economy is well supported by a number of construction companies operating in countries like India, Vietnam, China and Indonesia. The de-peg has in actual fact reduce the value of the contract agreed upon, and thereby making it harder for our companies to maintain profits. As always in construction tender, profit margins are known to be paper thin. And these projects are very susceptible to huge overhead of operating outside the country.

However, most industry players say that it’s not all bad news. The overall knock on effect of the improving currency value will bound to improve the property market. How much, however, remains to be seen.

Me & ECM Libra

It's have been a while since I last worte in this blog. Well, I just finished my 1st semester of study in UiTM Shah Alam. Unfortunately, I haven't got the result yet (hopefully I do good). There is also a new addition in my family. A baby girl was born on 17th April, 2004. She was delivered at Pantai Medical Centre in Bangsar. Her name is A'shadieeyah Nabeeha and she weigh in about 2.64 kg at birth. Since 3rd of May this month, I started a new job in ECM Libra. Therefore, now I have to commute to KL from Seremban by trains to reach my work place. I'll explain further about my job in my next blog.
